Episode 15: Atomic Tour Day 11 - They Might Be Giants

It’s big tree country! We travel from the big trees in Oregon to the bigger trees in Redwood National Forest to the biggest trees in the Avenue of the Giants.

Along the way we find giant bovine balls, drive-through trees, Germans with walking sticks (or so they say), evidence of unfathomable flooding and a fancy restaurant in very not fancy little forest town.

Yeah for Paul Bunyan! I moved to Crescent City when I was 11 and went through high school there. For Easter the first year we went to Trees of Mystery because it was free with tours and an egg hunt. My six year old brother ended up missing and I went into the parking lot trying to find him. Suddenly a booming voice asked “Are you okay little girl?” and described me. It felt really strange to tell a giant fiberglass logger that I was looking for my brother. He asked for his name and began booming “Nathan ****, please report to Paul Bunyan’s shoe, your sister is looking for you.” Nate came to check out the giant dude calling his name and we were able to find him.

To answer your question about southern or/norcal area, it is referred to Jefferson State (they tried to suceed from their respective states) it is a mix of very liberal and very conservative with a healthy dose of libertarian. This is how you get an area with equal parts tofu and bloody dear. And I miss the drive-thru coffee of the area.

Probably my favorite podcast so far. When I was about 10 years old my family did a road trip from BC to Disneyland. One of the few things I remember well outside of Disneyland itself was stopping at the Trees of Mystery and the giant Paul Bunyan (as well as the adjacent town selling all of the burl sculptures). Your stories totally reminded me of that which made me smile.

And I totally know what you mean about eastern climate bums versus westcoast bums. I moved to Ottawa from Victoria about 5 years ago. A huge portion of the homeless people out there seemed to be your extreme hippie type kids (who usually have clean/cut hair and some how manage to have clothes almost as nice as what I typically wear (and they usually have dogs)) with some of what I would call true homeless people. Here it is flipped with a few of the lazy hippy kids in the summer but mostly it is your true hardcore bums who are either addicts or winos and are homeless year round (even in the -30 degree winters).
